Railway vehicles are equipped with many oil dampers. Characteristics of the dampers have a great effect to ride comfort for passengers and safety of the vehicles. Therefore, technical specifications of the dampers are essential for vehicle design. We have developed a test equipment to estimate the characteristic of the oil dampers without performing field tests. It is possible to operate an oil damper three dimensionally to simulate actual running conditions of railway vehicles. We describe the outline, characteristic of the test equipment and automatic identification of oil damper characteristics in this paper.
