Reduction of EMI from Traction Circuit with Installing Shielded Cable

Satoru HATSUKADE,  Minoru NAGATA

In application of power electronics on traction circuits on railway vehicles, it is unable to avoid electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem. In the EMI, it is particularly difficult to reduce the noise level radiated from various equipment and cables. We therefore replaced ordinary inverter-motor cables with shielded cables, and investigated the effects of shielded cables for the noise reduction. Consequently, we verified the reduction of noise level exceeding 10-dB at 100-kHz with shield bonding at both ends. The shielded cables are effective for noise reduction on traction circuits specifically such as jumper cables or motor leads to which other methods are inapplicable to reduce the noise level.
