The design of lining segment of a shield tunnel used to be done up to now by routine calculation method. In this method, earth pressure, water pressure and ground deformation are simplified, and existence of joint of segment is also ignored or simplified. Therefore the calculation result becomes different from real behavior, and quantitative confirmation of safety turns out to be not enough and the economy may be ruined. Several experiments and analyses were carried out with the purpose of evaluating the earth pressure, the water pressure with precision and to grasp the ground deformation which acted on segmental lining, and to produce an exact model of joint of segment. As a result, a design of more reasonable segmental lining than the one so far employed has been developed and it is introduced here.
