The RTRI accepts contracts to perform field surveys, extraction of cores, analysis work, clarifying causal factors, diagnosis of durability and proposals for the most appropriate repair measures.
The late 20th century was a period of suffering for concrete. The safety
and the reliability of concrete structures were shaken by a series of problems:
the appearance of early deterioration phenomena such as neutralization,
alkali aggregate reactions, salt damage and so on, at the same time as
concrete fell from tunnel linings and from viaducts.
The 21st century is called the age of stock maintenance. Concrete Materials
laboratory, Materials Technology Division, The Railway Technical Research
Institute is striving to meet the needs of the present age using its accumulated
experience and technology.

The RTRI has developed and uses an ion absorption method that controls the progress of concrete deterioration using an absorbent that absorbs and fixes harmful ions that cause deterioration.
