Structure Technology Division

Profile

Structures Technology Division is composed of five laboratories: Concrete Structures, Steel & Hybrid Structures, Foundation & Geotechnical Engineering, Tunnel, and Architecture. Research and development related to design and maintenance of structures and buildings, earthquake resistant, etc., are progressed.

Introduction

Railway Structure Technology Division is pushing forward the research and development to realize "anti-disaster measures and early recovery”, “effective maintenance, construction and improvement” of the railway structures including bridges, viaducts, soil structures, tunnels and stations with the principal objective to solve the issues of safety reduction and increase of maintenance cost of railway structures caused by both the deterioration of the existing railway structures and the labor shortage.
In addition to approaching to the problems by the numerical analysis, our division is proceeding with much experimental R&D with use of the distinctive examination devices and apparatus such as the static and dynamic loading examination apparatus interlocked with numerical analysis, the large scale shaking table having the largest degree power in our country, the shaking table equipped the rainfall device, the tunnel lining loading device, the station simulator imitating a station building in the suburbs of the metropolitan area, etc.
Our division is revising a series of railway structure design and maintenance standards, providing the railway companies with the technical support for the investigation and restoration of damaged railway structures caused by an earthquake and rainfall.
Through our R&D and technical support relating to the railway structures, our division would like to contribute to the development of railways and the realization of a comfortable society.
