Materials Technology Division
Profile
The Materials Technology Division comprises four specialized laboratories: Concrete Materials, Vibration-Isolating Materials, Lubricating Materials, and Frictional Materials. Each laboratory undertakes research and development on railway components within its respective domain, with a focus on elucidating degradation and damage mechanisms under actual service environments, developing corresponding maintenance technologies as well as advanced materials and systems that incorporate these insights.
Introduction
As the demand for reliable and efficient railway operation continues to grow, maintenance of rolling stock and infrastructure has become increasingly critical. The Materials Technology Division is committed to advancing the understanding of degradation and damage behavior of railway components under railway-specific service conditions, and to addressing practical challenges encountered in the field.
Our research activities emphasize the development of innovative materials, systems, and maintenance technologies aimed at reducing maintenance requirements and extending service life, thereby contributing directly to sustainability and decarbonization goals.
To support these efforts, we employ a comprehensive suite of material analysis instruments, experimental facilities capable of controlled experiments based on railway-specific service environments, and advanced numerical simulation techniques. These approaches enable both fundamental understanding and applied solutions tailored to real-world railway systems.
A critical factor in our research and development is a deep understanding of real-world railway operations—encompassing on-site conditions, actual equipment, and practical constraints—together with close collaboration across related technical domains.
Looking ahead to a future in which data-driven engineering becomes increasingly prevalent, we will continue to enhance our contributions to the advancement of railway systems as a specialized group with deep expertise in railway materials and their in-service behavior.

Laboratories and their field
Concrete Materials
Concrete Material is researching and developing analysis, diagnosis, evaluation, and repairing technologies for degradational phenomenon of railway concrete structures such as elevated structures, tunnel lining, slab tracks, and poles.
Vibration-Isolating Materials
Vibration-Isolating Materials is in charge of polymeric materials such as vibration isolating material like axis spring rubber, floor material, materials for vibration suppression, soundproof, coating material for structures, and track pads.
Lubricating Materials
Lubricating Materials focuses on two fields: rolling bearings equipped with the running gears of railway vehicles, and lubricating oil and grease using for the rolling bearings, the driving device and the wheel/rail contact areas.
Frictional Materials
Frictional Materials is researching and developing materials and systems for railway-specific contact boundaries such as rails/wheels, wheels/brakes and catenaries/pantographs.
